The year 2024 underscores a critical truth: technology and democracy are inextricably linked, shaping national futures worldwide. Today, digital inclusion plays a pivotal role in voter empowerment, fostering new channels for civic engagement, and grassroots mobilization. As we head into the crucial November elections, the importance of protecting those concepts has never been more important.

Various digital tools are enhancing voter participation - from online voter registration portals and digital absentee ballot requests to virtual town halls and candidate Q&A sessions. These digital resources are breaking down barriers to participation, making the voting process more accessible to all citizens.

Just look at us.vote. Earlier this year, we were proud to announce our work with U.S. Vote Foundation to launch the us.vote website. The website includes a Voter Journey Map, which provides a critical destination for voter outreach campaigns and offers a new way to simplify the voting process for American citizens around the world. These tools exist due to the internet's transformative power.

Social media platforms and online forums have revolutionized political discourse and voter engagement, serving as modern-day town halls. Citizens can access real-time information about candidates and issues, engage in debates and discussions with fellow voters, organize grassroots movements and rallies, fact-check claims and combat misinformation, and mobilize peers to participate in the voting process.

For Spanish speakers, the .Voto top-level domain offers a dedicated space for election-related content. This trusted and easily recognizable domain acts as a clear identifier for voting information, campaign websites, and civic engagement platforms.

While digital inclusion offers tremendous opportunities for voter empowerment, significant challenges remain. Bridging the digital divide by ensuring equitable access to technology and internet connectivity, protecting voter privacy and data security, and safeguarding the integrity of online discussions are all critical issues that demand our attention. Initiatives focused on digital literacy, cybersecurity, and equitable internet access are crucial in realizing the full potential of digital inclusion in the democratic process.

In this digital age of democracy, online platforms and digital tools are playing a crucial role in empowering voters. By embracing digital inclusion while addressing its challenges, we can create a more informed, engaged, and participatory electorate.

The future of democracy is being shaped not just at the ballot box, but in the digital spaces where citizens connect, learn, and mobilize. Let’s make sure these digital spaces are accessible by all.
